Real virtual art

Posted on

I have recently had a conversation about my work being both computational and digital, and how difficult it is to sell virtual work. The main thrust being that computational and digital work is difficult to sell because it’s not real somehow. I printed out that MY work is NOT virtual. It’s real. I create it using technology and then put it on canvas. The act of committing to canvas cements the artefact as being an artefact; it exists!. They are, I suppose, if you want to get technical, prints, but they are REAL. I only make one of each so it’s unique and it’s on canvas.

The secondary point was about the fact that being made on computers they are endlessly reproducible so devalued. This person commented “oh if it’s computer stuff it can be copied endlessly so of no value” I pointed out that printing and photography have been doing that for centuries but their eyes glazed over. Yes I do sell poster prints but so does everyone.

What’s disappointing is how few people/dealers/curators seem to understand emerging technology.

Dumbos.
