I’m an outsider, I do things my way and don’t really pay any attention to the commercial side of art world. Go to any launch in art galleries and now and with a few exceptions it literally is about commodity trading. I am totally disappointed that the art world now is just a world of commodities. Art is more than that, to me it’s an authentic human process unhindered by outside influences. It’s a reflection of our humanity. I guess I’m a purist and in that sense I’m probably a bit Brut.
Dubuffet characterized art brut as:
“Those works created from solitude and from pure and authentic creative impulses – where the worries of competition, acclaim and social promotion do not interfere – are, because of these very facts, more precious than the productions of professionals. After a certain familiarity with these flourishings of an exalted feverishness, lived so fully and so intensely by their authors, we cannot avoid the feeling that in relation to these works, cultural art in its entirety appears to be the game of a futile society, a fallacious parade.” — Jean Dubuffet.
I call myself a punk artist because I do what I want, authentic to how I’m feeling, but art Brut is a good description of me and my approach to antiselfie work. It’s created from solitude and from pure and authentic creative impulses brought on by critical illness, PTSD and lockdown.
